The Clemson Tigers are the official athletic team of Clemson U, and play in Division 1 in the NCAA, as a fellow member of the Atlantic Division in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They were given their title in 1986, when football coach Walter Riggs initially came to the school, then known as the Clemson Agricultural College of S.C.. He came to the varsity from Auburn College. Riggs had a deep appreciation of the Princeton Tigers, so it was due to this that he named the team’s mascot Tiger the mascot.
The Cocks of South Carolina are Clemson’s largest rival, in all every sport, not just football.
